  • “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Rom 6:4

Being buried indicates death, the end and cessation of life as it was. Being raised from the dead means a new beginning, a new life, and a new direction. When Jesus was buried in that borrowed tomb we were buried with Him. He became sin for us; we were born in and lived in sin. All of the wicked, evil, abominable, embarrassing transgressions that are done in life are a direct result of the sinful nature inherited from Adam. Jesus (the second Adam) not only died, which was important, but also preached in hell while His body was in repose from the cross to the borrowed tomb. When Jesus gave up the Ghost something happened...

He yielded up the Ghost on the cross which meant His spirit and soul left His body. But where did two-thirds of the triune Son of man go? His spirit and soul left His earthly body and immediately descended into the lower parts of the earth – the infernal regions of the underworld: Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things) Eph 4:8-10.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prisonFor this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. I Pet 3:18-19; 4:6

Jesus went into hell, this means that hell exists, and preached both to those who believed in His coming – to set them free – as well as those who lived evil lives – to announce their eternal punishment. It was good news for some and bad news for others. Paul says it like this, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” Phil 2:10. The angels bow in heaven, the redeemed/creation bow in earth, the wicked/demons bow under the earth. Under the earth is the infernal world. While there Jesus took the keys of death, hell, and the grave (see Rev 1:18).

While His body was in the grave Jesus established all authority over death, hell and the grave. Death has actually been abolished and the grave has been denied. Jesus now sits as judge and determines who spends eternity in Heaven with Him, and hell with the devil and his angels/demons. Jesus entered the Netherworld: the world of the dead: a place unknown to most people where secret and often illegal things are done (Webster). He went there for us to set us free that we might spend eternity with Him. In what seemingly looked like defeat ended up being ultimate victory for those who believe in Jesus.
