  • A man with an argument is always at the mercy of a man with an experience. To some Christians, Pentecost/tongues is just a phenomenon that occurred once to present the Gospel in other languages.  Their argument is, “Tongues are no longer necessary because we have the Bible in different languages now.”  Well, I beg to differ.  Peter said this gift (of the Holy Ghost) was to as many as the Lord our God calls.  I’m called, how about you?  Enjoy these scriptures from the Message Bible:

34Peter fairly exploded with his good news: “It’s God’s own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favorites! 35It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from—if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open. 36The Message he sent to the children of Israel—that through Jesus Christ everything is being put together again—well, he’s doing it everywhere, among everyone…44No sooner were these words out of Peter’s mouth than the Holy Spirit came on the listeners. 45The believing Jews who had come with Peter couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on “outsider” Gentiles, 46but there it was—they heard them speaking in tongues, heard them praising God.

Then Peter said, 47“Do I hear any objections to baptizing these friends with water? They’ve received the Holy Spirit exactly as we did.”  Acts 10:34, 44-47 The Message Bible

Then Peter took the floor: “Friends, you well know that from early on God made it quite plain that he wanted the pagans to hear the Message of this good news and embrace it—and not in any secondhand or roundabout way, but firsthand, straight from my mouth. 8And God, who can’t be fooled by any pretense on our part but always knows a person’s thoughts, gave them the Holy Spirit exactly as he gave him to us. 9He treated the outsiders exactly as he treated us, beginning at the very center of who they were and working from that center outward, cleaning up their lives as they trusted and believed him. Acts 15:7-9 The Message Bible

1Now, it happened that while Apollos was away in Corinth, Paul made his way down through the mountains, came to Ephesus, and happened on some disciples there. 2The first thing he said was, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? Did you take God into your mind only, or did you also embrace him with your heart? Did he get inside you?” “We’ve never even heard of that—a Holy Spirit? God within us?” 3“How were you baptized, then?” asked Paul. “In John’s baptism.”

4“That explains it,” said Paul. “John preached a baptism of radical life-change so that people would be ready to receive the One coming after him, who turned out to be Jesus. If you’ve been baptized in John’s baptism, you’re ready now for the real thing, for Jesus.”

5And they were. As soon as they heard of it, they were baptized in the name of the Master Jesus. 6Paul put his hands on their heads and the Holy Spirit entered them. From that moment on, they were praising God in tongues and talking about God’s actions. 7Altogether there were about twelve people there that day. Acts 19:1-7 The Message Bible
